In each case a guide is given in square brackets as to where the original document might have appeared in the catalogue: N1 [after FN 1289] Assignment for 21 years, £440 and 3 successive payments of £100: (i) Arnold Spencer of Cople, gentleman (ii) John Jackson of St Neots, dyer. Spencer's interest in the river Ouse and the sluices thereupon. [Recites: 21 July 1617, Letters Patent James I to John Gason of Finchley, giving authority to make all manner of locks, sluices etc. for making of rivers navigable, with power to collect contributions for the same. 28 February 1618, Assignment of the above by John Gason to Thomas Girton, vintner, and Arnold Spencer, in the counties of Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire. 27 February 1625, Assignment for 21 years by Thomas Girton to Arnold Spencer of his share in the sluices built by them between St Ives and Bedford, on certain conditions which have not been kept; thus the whole rights are now vested in Arnold Spencer.] Witnesses: John Hyde, Christopher Goodfellowe, Roger Heard 21 Jun 1626 N13B [after FN 1293] Apparently (along with Transcript N13A) another copy of FN 1292, listed as 'Ditto, made in 1784', the entry being made in a later hand. 1784 N38 [after FN 1340] Bedfordshire Quarter Sessions. Present: Sir Anthony Chester, baronet, Sir Villiers Charnock, baronet, William Boteler, esquire, William Farrer of Tingrith, esquire, Thomas Christie, esquire, justices and commissioners under the Act of 1664. Order that Ashley is not to take in toll more than a moiety of the above, which are the rates of land carriage in 1663 from below Eaton mills to Bedford; 5s for: a chaldron of coals containing 2 bushels of heaped measure; 8 1/2 quarters oats, or 6 1/2 quarters barley, or 8 1/2 quarters malt, or 5 quarters wheat, peas or beans; 1 ton iron, salt, wine or other goods. 28 Jan 1687/88 N40 [after FN 1362] Bill in Chancery: Henry Ashley of Eynesbury, gentleman. May 1688 N42-44 [after FN 1363] Depositions of witnessess at Eaton on both parts, and at Bedford on the part of Ashley. 1688 N46 [after FN 1364-1365] The answer of John Jemmatt to the bill of complaint of Henry Ashley. 1688
