REPORT on a convict now awaiting trial. JOSEPH BAKER He was discharged from H>M. Prison, Portland, on the 5th July 1918, on a licence expiring on the 4th April 1919, and now stands committed for trial at the Bedford Quarter Sessions, on charge of burglary. When I saw him in Portland before his discharge, about his plans, he asked to be sent to Woburn Sands for work on a farm. Our Associate at Bedford, Mr. A. Setchell, agreed to receive him and assist him to get work after he had reported to the Military Authorities. On his arrival he was received by Mr Setchell, and after reporting to the Police, he was instructed to return the following day to report to the Military Authorities, and he said he was willing to do so. He wished to spend the night with a married sister at Biddenham, and was sent to Biddenham, as he desired. He did not return to our Associate the following day, and on enquiry it was found that he had left the house during the night without informing anyone and had disappeared. Nothing further was heard of him until the Police informed us that his arrest was sought on a charge of failing to notify his change of address. Early last month I was informed that he had been arrested on the present charge. Signed [Grant] Wilson The Clerk to the Justices Bedford Quarter Sessions
