  • Scope and Content
Received George's letter from the 10th May and will do his best to advise George on the questions he's asked. Does not think that George should send his father [James Askew] an allowance while he is still able to work but that an occasional present of £5-10 would be an act of affection that he would appreciate. Recomends that the clergyman of the parish give the money. Once George's father is no longer able to work, and as long as George is in good circumstances, it would be dutiful to give him an allowance of about £10 a year but the parish authorities would be best not to know about it. Says that George's intention to make, or have already made, a will is a proper step but advises to have it legally done to avoid contention. Advises seeking consultation with an honest lawyer. Will not decline George's wish to have him down as his executor, nor would Mr James Turney 'but as he is so much older than you, and is I have lately heard not unlikely to remove from Odell (though this is a secret) I am not sure that his name would be so good'. Suggest putting down the name of the Rector, William Cornish Hunt, as he is a young man of about 30 and is likely to remain in Odell until he dies. Feels that after George's time in the colonies that life in England would no longer suit him and there may not be work. Notes that almost everyday there are farms being sold of various sizes. The third this year is to be sold next week, about 38 acres and expects that it will probably fetch £50 per acre. Other farms sold were about 100 acres and thinks the price of these was no more than £45 [per acre] which is nearer to the price of land in Suffolk. Reiterates his offer of a loan as discussed in his previous letter [FAC152/1/10].
