    IN THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD Petty Sessional Division of Ampthill Before the Court of Summary Jurisdiction sitting at the County Court Hall in Ampthill in the said County (being a Petty Sessional Court) The 31st day of January 1918 Herbert Edward Hawkes of Marston Moretaine in the County of Bedford, Farmer (hereinafter called the Defendant) is this day convicted before this court for that he on the 19th day of November 1917 and at divers & other days and times between the 1st day of November and the 19th day of November 1917 at Marston Moretaine within the County aforesaid. Did by unreasonably omitting to do a certain Act to wit omitting to provide and supply a certain animal to wit a Chestnut Mare with a sufficient quantity of fit and wholesome food cause the aid animal unnecessary suffering and was thereby guilty of an offence of cruelty within the meaning of the PROTECTION OF Animals Act 1911. Contrary to the Statute in that case provided. And it is adjudged that the Defendant for his said offence be imprisoned in His Majesty’s Prison at Bedford and there kept to hard labour for the space of one Calendar month and further. And that the defendant for his said offence do forfeit and pay the sum of Twenty-five pounds and do also pay the sum of Thirteen pounds three shillings and six pence for costs forthwith. And in Default of payment, it is adjudged that the sums due under this adjudication be levied by distress and sale of Defendant’s goods and in default of sufficient distress that the Defendant be imprisoned in the said Prison for the space of Three Calendar months commencing at the termination of the imprisonment before adjudged unless the said sums be sooner paid.
