I Herbert Edward Hawkes of Hunger Hill Farm in the Parish of Marston Moretaine in the County of Bedford Farmer DO HEREBY give you and each of you NOTICE that it is my intention at the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace to be holden at Bedford in and for the County of Bedford to Appeal against a certain conviction of me by the Court of Summary Jurisdiction sitting at Ampthill in the said County for that I ON THE 19TH DAY OF November 1917 and at divers other days and times between the 1st day of November and the 19th day of November in the year aforesaid at Marston Mortaine in the County of Bedford did by unreasonably omitting to do a certain act wit omitting to provide and supply a certain animal to wit a Chestnut Mare with a sufficient quantity of fit and wholesome food cause the said animal unnecessary suffering and were thereby guilty of an Offence of Cruelty within the meaning of the Protection of Animals Act 1911 AND that the general grounds of such appeal are “that the Court of Summary Jurisdiction sitting at Ampthill had no power in respect of the said conviction to fine me £25 (Twenty five pounds) and also Order me to pay the sum of £13.3s.6d (Thirteen pounds three shillings and sixpence) costs having regard to Section 5 (1) of 4 and 5 George 5 C 58 and also having regard to 1 and 2 George 5 C 27 which fixes the maximum Penalty upon Summary Conviction at £25 and that the mare the subject of the charge against me was in poor condition when received by me and that whilst in my possession it was properly fed having regard to the small amount of work it did” and that I am not guilty of the said Offence.
