    In the County of Bedford Petty Sessional Division of Ampthill I HERBERT EDWARD HAWKES of Hunger Hill Farm Marston Moretaine in the said County of Bedford Farmer acknowledge to owe to our Sovereign Lord the King as principal the sum of Fifty Pounds if I fail in the Condition hereunder written. (Signed) Herbert E. Hawkes TAKEN before me the 5th day of February 1918 (signed) W. Claridge Justice of the Peace for the County of Bedford The Condition of the above written recognizance is such that if the above bounder Herbert Edward Hawkes shall at the next Court of General or Quarter Sessions to be holden in and for the County aforesaid prosecute his Appeal from a certain conviction of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction sitting at the County Court Hall in Ampthill in the said County bearing date the 31st day of January 1918 whereby he was convicted for that he on the 19th day of November 1917 and at divers other days and times between the 1st day of November and the said 19th day of November in the year aforesaid at Marston Moretaine aforesaid did by unreasonably omitting to do a certain act to wit omitting to provide and supply a certain animal to wit a chestnut mare with a sufficient quantity of fit and wholesome food caused the said Animal unnecessary suffering and were thereby guilty on an offence of cruelty within the meaning of the Protection of Animals Act 1911 Contrary to the Statute in that case provided. AND that if the said Herbert Edward Hawkes shall appear at the next Sessions and prosecute such Appeal and abide the Judgment of the court thereon and pay such costs as may be awarded thereby then the said recognizance shall be void but otherwise shall remain in full force.
