Examinations & depositions - Examination of Wm. Smith jnr., Leighton Buzzard, butcher; 'I was going down to the north end of Leighton Buzzard ... by the .... Black Horse I saw Thomas Franklin the constable ... coming out ... backwards - John Brandom, Leighton Buzzard, labr., was opposite and close to the constable - I saw ... [him] strike the ... constable twice 'bang full in the face' the blows knocked the constable down on his back ... John Brandom fell down with him - Sarah Adams, Leighton Buzzard, single woman got on top of the constable and jolted his head against the ground - Benjamin Brandom, Leighton Buzzard, labr, was present 'but did not strike the constable although he appeared to be helping his brother'. There were a great number of persons present. Franklin said 'For God's sake Smith lay hold of her' meaning Sarah Adams 'or I shall be murdered'. He pulled Adams away from the constable who then took Benjamin Brandom into custody; John Brandom ran away and was still at large. 'The constable appeared very much hurt and his face was all over blood - the constable shewed his staff.'
