Examinations and depositions: Examination of John Sturge(s); says the charge 'is quite false'. He was at the Cross Keys the night before drinking with John Page until 10pm when he went home to bed. Between 12 and 1 am he got up 'and went through the turnpike with a horse in company with the said John Page, who he met going down Hazlewood Lane ... he had a sack on the horse with carrots and onions ... he does not know who he bought them of but to the best of his recollection he bought them at Fenny Stratford ...' he was going to meet a man by appointment near Elstow Bridge 'the man was not there - he set the sack down by the side of the road' and went about a quarter of a mile toward Bedford, when he returned the sack was gone. He had left John Page looking for mushrooms in Houghton field before he put the sack down. On his way back he again 'met with Page in Houghton'. They then went together to Dyer's house. Did not know the man's name that he was to carry the onions and carrot to or where he lived. Examination of John Page who says he 'is not guilty of any such thing'. He went to bed at 10.15pm after drinking in the Cross Keys, got up the following morning at 5 am 'the Town clock struck five just as I was doing my shoes up'; he took a bag to find mushrooms, first in Houghton Park then in William Robinson's closes. He met John Sturges near the almshouses in Houghton Conquest and went with him to Dyer's house here they had three or four pints of beer each.
