In each case a guide is given in square brackets as to where the original document might have appeared in the catalogue: N140 [after FN 1487] Copy of the King's receiver's book of quit-rents: £6 13s 4d issuing out of the passing of boats between St Ives and within 4 miles of Bedford. 8 Jul 1696 N189 [after FN 1312] Release of actions: John Jemmatt to Richard Walter. 4 May 1699 N191 [after FN 1313] Agreement: (i) Charles, Earl of Manchester (ii) Henry Ashley of Eaton Socon, esquire, and John Jemmatt of Great Barford. 1. The Earl, who owns Hemingford mills, shall provide a person to reside there who shall keep a written account of goods passing in barges through Hemingford sluice, with the names of the owner of the goods, the waterman conveying them, and their origin and destination. 2. The Earl's tenants shall suffer to be drawn so much water as shall be sufficient to carry lighters from St Ives bridge to Hemingford sluice, and shall keep a sufficient head of water to carry them over the shallow near Mr Newman's watergate, provided there be three gangs or 6 boats at least. They shall not draw the old Fulling Mill gate so as to hinder any lighters; nor shall they deepen the Fishing Gull at Houghton mills. They shall also keep one of the sluice gates at Hemingford sluice locked every night and every Sabbath day so that no boat shall pass without giving an account. 3. H. Ashley and J. Jemmatt will pay the Earl £30 per annum in default of which payment the Earl himself can collect tolls. 11 Dec 1702 N192 [after FN 1473] Sir J. Hawles' opinion of Jemmatt's title. 19 Oct 1703 N193 [after FN 1313] Assignment: (i) Anne Jemmatt of Great Barford, widow (ii) Sarah Jemmatt her eldest daughter (iii) Dorothy Jemmatt her youngest daughter. A moiety of the navigation of the river Ouse between Barford bridge and St Ives and the sluices relating thereto and all haling-paths and tolls; on condition that Ann receives the tolls during her life, subject to the payment of £50 per annum to Sarah or alternatively £1000. Sarah is to pay Dorothy £500. In due course Sarah shall assign the said moiety to Samuel Jemmatt, only son of Ann Jemmatt. Witnesses: Charles Wood, William Bucknall 3 Mar 1706/07 N195 [after FN 1314] Bond for the performance of covenants. 12 Feb 1707/08 N196 and N197 [after FN 1314] Conveyance (lease and release), £820: (i) Anne Jemmatt of Great Barford, widow (ii) Sarah Jemmatt, her eldest daughter. A moiety of the rivers sluices, and emoluments in and upon the river Ouse in Huntingdonshire and Bedfordshire, on conditions similar to those in Transcript N193. [Recites that on 21 February 1706 Sarah mortgaged and afterwards sold a messuage in Berkshire 'in order to enlarge the time for redeeming the said navigation for a year longer.'] Witnesses: Charles Digges, John Hughes 25, 26 Feb 1707/08 N198 [after FN 1314] Bond for performance of covenants. 25, 26 Feb 1707/08 N199 [after FN 1314] Release of actions: Anne Jemmatt to Richard Walter. Witness: John Hughes 12 Mar 1707/8 N200 [after FN 1315] Marriage settlement (lease of lease and release) on the marriage of (i) and (iii): (i) Sarah Jemmatt of Great Barford, spinster, one of the daughters of Anne Jemmatt of Great Barford, widow (ii) Thomas Bedford of Bedford and Christopher Digges of Holborn, gentlemen (iii) Sandra Foster of Great Barford, gentleman. A moiety of the rivers, streams etc, on conditions similar to those in Transcript N193. Witnesses: Thomas Foster, John Fullfor 7,8 Feb 1709 N202 [after FN 1315] Release, £100: (i) William Palmer of London, watchmaker, and wife Dorothy, daughter of Ann Jemmatt (ii) Samuel Jemmatt of Great Barford, gentleman. All that the moiety of and in all and every the rivers, sluices etc. Witnesses: Christopher Digges, I. Vaughan 11 Mar 1714 N203 [after FN 1341-1346] Letter from Henry Ashley at Eaton to Mr Simmons of Great Barford relating to the navigation between Eaton and Bedford. 19 May 1718 Letter from Henry Ashley at Eaton to Mr Jemmatt relating to payments due under Chancery decree. 14 May 1723 N207 [after FN 1315] Will of Samuel Jemmatt of Great Barford, gentleman. To sister Sarah, all lands, tenements, tolls for the passage of barges on the river Ouse in the counties of Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire, charged with annuity of £40 to sister Dorothy, and with the payment of £1000 to Samuel Palmer, son of sister Dorothy, at the age 24, also £100 to apprentice him, and £20 per annum while he is serving apprenticeship; and also charged with the payment of £115 to Michael Dymocke of Bedford, gentleman.
