TAKE NOTICE That I the undersigned Edward Clement Coleman (trading as E. Coleman & Son) of Ampthill in the County of Bedford do intend to enter and prosecute an appeal at the next practicable court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace to be holden at Bedford in and for the County of Bedford against a certain conviction and order against me bearing date the 25th day of January 1918 and made by Edward Joseph Jekyll, Howard Spensley and Wallace Percy Gordon Esquires, Justices of the Peace for the said County of Bedford sitting at Ampthill aforesaid whereby I the said Edward Clement Coleman was convicted of having: “by the hands of Donald Kitchener my servant and agent “sold to the prejudice of the said Henry James the Purchaser “a certain article of food, to wit sausages, which was “adulterated with 0.238% pf Boron Trioxide (B2 O3) equal to “29.4 grains per pound of Boric acid (H3 BO3) and which was “not of the nature substance and quality demanded by the “Purchaser contrary to Section 6 of the Food and Drugs Act 1875 And after was ordered to pay fine of 40/- and £28.10s.6d costs AND FURTHER TAKE NOTICE That the general grounds of the said appeal are: - 1. That I am not guilty of the said offence. 2. That the conviction was against the weight of the evidence 3. That there is no standard for the materials of which sausages should be manufactured. 4. That the prosecution did not discharge the onus of proof. 5. That the said conviction was bad in law All of which premises you and each of you are hereby desired to take notice.
