- Scope and ContentIn the County of Bedford Petty Sessional Division of Ampthill I Edward Clement Coleman of Ampthill in the County of Bedford, Grocer acknowledge to owe Our Sovereign Lord the King as principal the Sum of fifty pounds if I fail in the condition hereunder written. Justice of the Peace for the County of Bedford The Condition of the above written recognizance is such that if the above bounder Edward Clements Coleman shall at the next Court of General or Quarter Sessions to be holden in and for the County aforesaid prosecuted his Appeal from a certain a conviction of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction Sitting at the County Town Hall in Ampthill aforesaid bearing date the 25th day of January 1918 whereby he was convicted for that he on the 2nd day of November 1917 at Ampthill aforesaid by the hands of Donald Kitchener his Servant and Agent did unlawfully sell to the prejudice of one Henry James the purchaser a certain Article of Food to wit sausages which was adulterated with 0.238 per cent of Boron Trioxide (B2 O3) equal to 29.4 grains per pound of Boric Acid (H3 BO3) and was not of the nature substance and quality demanded by the purchaser contrary to Section 6 of the of the Food and Drugs Act 1875. And that if the said Edward Clement Coleman shall appear at the next Sessions and prosecute such Appeal and abide the Judgment of the Court thereon and pay such costs as maybe awarded thereby then the said recognizance shall be void but otherwise shall remain in full force.
