- Scope and ContentDear Sir, under an Enclosure Act of 37 Geo III 1797 in respect of the Parish of Compton -cum-Shefford a tithe rent charge is payable by Sir Alergnon Osborn & the owner for the time being of Chicksands Priory to the rector of Campton of such a yearly sum as shall be equivalent to the yearly value of the alloments awarded to the late Sir George Osborn the then owner of Chicksandsfrom the lands allotted to him for tithe under this Act & it was further provided that for regulating such rent either party might by writing at any time after the expiration of 1 years from the date of the first payment apply to the Justices at any Quarter Session held in & for the County of Bedford to have 3 persons nominated as Arbitrators to ascertain the average price of a Winchester bushel of good marketable wheat within the said county for the space of 15 years then last past. Sir Algernon Osborn the present owner of Chicksands Priory now desires to apply to have the rent charge fixed for the ensuing 15 years & we shall be obliged if you will kindly let us know what further steps are necessary for him to take for this purpose, will you accept this letter on his behalf as the formal application in writing or will it be necessary for him to apply at sessions. We may mention that we have obtained from the Board of Agriculture a certificate that the average price of British wheatper bushel (Winchester measure) in the County for the 15 years ending 31st December last was 3s 8 1/4d. The amount of corn under the Award is 624 bushels 2 quarts & 1,1/4 pints. Yours faithfully Trower Still & Co,
