- Scope and ContentGentlemen, I ask you to deal leniently with me as I have been arrested 4 times in quick succession and I have had 5 weeks in custody and me and my wife inly had a penny & 3 pairs of laces when we started on the road to look for work, in (witch) which my wife has found since I have been in custody. Gentlemen my wife had a good many hardships, the first 3 weeks nearly starving & a night laying in the grass, Gentlemen I hope you will give me a chance this time as I kept out of prison 6 years, I should not have done this, only we had a pennyworth of bread between us & sleeping out at nights, hunger is a very sharp thorn & I think it makes a man do what he would not to think of doing. Gentlemen if you will look over it this time I will take good care of the chance as my wife has got me some work at the same place to go to & I can assure you I will look after it. Thank You Gentlemen. Gentlemen my wife works at Wickham Bishops, near Witham. Identfied as Henry Howard by pencil note in the top left hand corner, with his name & dated 20-6-13
