  • Scope and Content
This Deponent Arthur Cannon Smith of Luton upon his Oath saith as follows: I am a Detective Sergeant in the Luton Borough Police Force. On Saturday the 6th July 1911 I recovered information that 211 Hitchin Road Luton had been entered and that a Gent’s gold chain, a Lady’s Gold watch, Gold Brooch, Gold Bracelet had been stolen and about Eight Shillings in money. I made enquires and found the Gents gold chain pledged at the Pack Street pawnshop. I went in search of the Prisoner but failed to find him until Saturday the 8th July when the Prisoner was brought to the Police Station by Detective Attwood. I said to the Prisoner “On the 6th of this month you pledged a gent’s gold chain at the Park Street Pawnshop which has since been identified as stolen how do you account for it being in your possession”. The Prisoner said “I will tell the truth I stole it” I said to him “There is also missing a Lady’s Gold watch, Gold Brooch and a gold Bracelet what have you done with them” The Prisoner said “I sold then t a Cab-man named Swain for four and sixpence” I afterwards received the Gold watch, Bracelet, and Brooch from the Cab man Swain . I then charged the Prisoner with breaking and entering 211 Hitchin Road, between the hours of 6.45 am on the 5th July and 7pm on the 6th July and stealing therefrom one Gents Gold chain, one Lady’s gold watch, gold Brooch and Gold Bracelet and about eight shillings in money. He made no reply to the charge. On searching the prisoner at the Police Station, I found in his possession the Pawn Ticket produced. Signed by Arthur C. Smith
