    I hereby certify that this is a true copy of the original conviction filed in my Office dated this 6th day of December1910. Clerk of the Peace. In the County Borough of Northampton. Before the Court of Summary Jurisdiction sitting at the Guildhall, in the said County of Borough. The 28th day of August one thousand nine hundred and nine. Arthur Louis Griffiths otherwise John Smith, of the County Borough of Northampton hereinafter called the defendant, being an adult within the meaning of the Summary Jurisdiction Act, 1879, is this day charged for that he on the twenty sixth day of June 1909, at the County Borough aforesaid, unlawfully knowingly and designedly did falsely pretend to one Alfred Cox that he the said defendant was authorised by Mr. Brown Veterinary Surgeon to sell a quantity of [turf] for him the said Mr. Brown by means of which said false pretence the said defendant did then unlawfully obtain from the said Alfred Cox three shillings and sixpence in money the moneys of the said Alfred Cox with intent to defraud whereas in truth and in fact the said defendant was not authorised by the said Mr. Brown to sell [turf] for him and the said Mr. Brown had not them any turf for sale as he the said defendant well knew at the time when he did so falsely pretend as aforesaid contrary to the Statue in such case made and provided. The defendant having consented to be dealt with summarily is convicted of the said offence. And it is adjudged that he be for is said offence imprisoned in His Majesty’s Prison at Northampton aforesaid and there kept to hard labour for the space of one calendar month.
