Scope and Content
Brought a cart and goods back from Toddington fair for his master, James Elliman of Hitchin, draper. Stopped at the Rose & Crown public house for an hour for refreshment. On reaching Hitchin he found a parcel missing. Told his master and then returned with John Peck, a journeyman of Mr Elliman, to Barton, where they called on the constable. On going to the Rose & Crown with a search warrant the following day they were told by Josiah Bligh that he had seen John Hill concealing a sack of clothes in a ditch. They then proceeded to James Valentine's house, master of Josiah Bligh, where they found the clothing in the sack and which Studman identifies as his masters. Examination of Josiah Bligh, Barton, labourer; saw John Hill throw the sack into a ditch as he was working in one of his master's fields. Examination of James Brown, Barton, labourer; working with Josiah Bligh and saw a man throw a sack into the ditch, Bligh said it was Jack Oliver (Oliver being a nick name by which John Hill is known).
