- Scope and Content“My dear Mrs Matthews, Having understood that your son John had been in town to rap [?] his examination and returned home without calling upon us, I fear there must be some decided misunderstanding or misapprehension of the spirit & nature of my last letter to his uncle, which I thought it only just to myself to explain in order to remove any erroneous judgement that may have been formed upon it. The fact of my not accepting your son for a fourtnights preparation was the serious expenses for so short a time, but forgetting the moment that he had to come to town under any circumstances, I at once remembered as soon as I had sent the first letter, and then wrote for him to come. Economy for your sake having been my only consideration. If, however, I have judged erroneous from this motive it was a pure one and am truly sorry for it, as my attachment for your son John remains the same as ever. I shall be glad to hear from you on the subject and hope he has passed successfully without me. Please tell him Bell who has left us about a year ago is coming back to prepare for the army and intends working during the vacations. Your son is going on very satisfactory – today is the first day of our examinations and I hope he will pass well. With kind regards to master John …PS your son says he needs a pair of dress boots for summer as Master John new a pair also, shall I order them? I shall be glad to hear if my former has been found correct, I think I forwarded it either to your son or to your daughter.”
