- Scope and Content“Dear Sir we have arranged with Mrs Matthews to take the Bonded premises on Skinner Street Newport for a term of 7 years at the yearly rent of £35 as soon as she can gain possession, at present the premises are held by a firm called Down & Co of Swansea who have let to another firm Golsworthy & Son of the same town. The latter not recognised as a tenant by Mrs Matthews. There is in the cellar a small quantity of ships stores in the name of Down & Co which Golsworthy appears to be owner of & he promised us to give up possession of the keys provided we paid him for the stores – he has made several engagements with us which he has not kept & we are rather put to an inconvenience in consequence. It also appears that the last half years rent (£15) has not been paid. Mrs Matthews wished us to write you on the subject as she is anxious for us to have it. We are quite willing to pay them for the stores (less the rent due £15) provided we can get possession – we fancy both want to get out of payment of the arrear of rent – Mrs Matthews says their notice to quit was not legal & their term does not expire until November next. Can you by any means help us out of the difficulty?”
