Sent nomination paper for St Anne’s for Mr Soward to sign as it required a governor’s signature. “Mr Phillipps (of Newport) whose nephew was there said he spent £30 on votes; do you not think it would be money well paid out, if you knew of any energetic man in London who would attend the council and buy what votes he could (I mean a clerk or some one who could be paid for his trouble) as I have no friend that could do it? I am writing by tonights post to the secretary to know whether he can assist me in getting votes; ought I not to have some cards or papers (something like the one you shewed me of the Spumarson’s [?] child) printed?”
