  • Scope and Content
Has written to Mrs Stone. Has written to two schools in Newport but both are full. Will add Tom’s notes to Bens “I like what you have said very much… The landlord is doing all in the house as it has never been thoroughly finished; we are very busy altering the bed furniture (as we are not keeping the 4 post bedsteads) into window curtains.” Can only get promises of payment for rent of bonded stores. Mr Winter thinks it would be better to let to one responsible person rather than three unsatisfactory parties. “Since September Willie has been out shooting a great deal and neglecting his business, that I told Moore (I cannot meet with Willie) he was to pay for all he had had from me and I told Slade to apply for the amount and therefore we do not think it advisable to say anything to Willie about taking the remainder of the stores…” Mr Winter needs money to pay debts. “The sale at the farm realized £420 but the money has not yet been paid everything was sold and most of it cleared off but Mr Bateman (or rather Mr Rogers for Mr B) gave a month to clear off hay, straw and timber, but at the same time said as it was so wet, rather than cut up the land by hauling in bad weather he would not be particular for a few days. Thank you very much for paying the Ilfracombe accounts I was much surprised to find I owed any there, for from Mama’s and Lizzie’s letters I imagined they had given everything and I have written more than once to thank them for doing so, If it will not be troubling you please to pay the Swansea account for Mr Winter is vexed, he says he told me to tell you before that Henry is old enough to work and he has no money to pay what is now owed; neither Benjamin nor Jclora[?] said anything about paying for any schooling; but Lizzie wrote that she would help me pay for Mary’s. Bessie sends love & thanks for the Gazette.”
