  • Scope and Content
“I fear with you that Willie will not do much good for himself, he promised me that when he was on his own account he would be very steady and stay in at night keeping his own accounts, etc and I gave him, all the bare necessary furniture that he would require for bedroom and office; but he was seen on Sunday driving about and the groceries that I ordered for him at Cordy’s he said to Mr Cordy were not to be sent down; so he must be living out, I did not give him bed & table linen for it was all out here but I told him to ask Mrs Williams to lend him some for one week, and I would send some to him. I think there ought to be some notice given to all the trade persons that William used to buy off, for I have had 12 letters (mostly printed circulars) and I have to pay 1d each although the post office authorities redirect them themselves. I have written to the Newport office about it but have not heard from them about it. John Stone says they should not charge. I cannot get a second one to be security with me for the Bond I have asked Mr Smith and he says he is afraid if Willie has anything to do with it but perhaps he would say the same if any other tenant had it & Mr Hallen refuses. I do not like to ask Mr Winter he seems so very ill. I have not seen Willie since last Saturday he then said he had written telling you what he had done or else what he intended doing (I am not sure which he said) he told me he had taken a free store at £50 per annum but the rent was not to commence till the 24th inst so if you would kindly write to him before that time perhaps he would not have to pay anything I gave him up the free stores without charge; but his morning I received the enclosed which he must have ordered and I am afraid I may be charged with it. Mr Winter said he had written to you about an accountant that wanted your advice. I called to see Mr Vernon (Bank) and he told me if I would send him the papers (in the cash box) to receive money he would collect it at the right time for when I had the cash box given to me last Saturday I found that 3 papers ought to have been presented some time ago. I think I ought to advertise in some grocery papers that I have given up business. Mr Winter now has authority to sign cheques instead of myself being so far from town. Mr Phillips was here to breakfast yesterday and I have him (your note to me) for Mr Winter to read, in case Willie should apply to him about anything so if I have omitted answering anything please excuse it I will write again when I secure it if I find I have done. I should like to meet you when you come to Newport, if you can let me know when you are coming I will drive over… The boy left school Tuesday.”
