  • Scope and Content
“I am extremely obliged to you for writing to dear F [sisiter Fanny?] she is a most unselfish and self denying creature but as it seems the wish of others, that the children should go to her I consent but fear the anxiety and noise will be more than she is able to bear, besides the wear and tear of paint furniture, carpets etc, all which little items cannot well be charged for, but she will feel them well more than I used, for an only child never plays, so riotously nor runs about as much as when there are several and I know sometimes F has told me that they have not a £1 in the house, so how can they afford to keep 3 hungry children and charge nothing for food or washing? Mr Cordy has paid £200 and I give up all the house (except the two attics) this afternoon. Bessie left Thursday and I hope to go today but I do not know anything about Willie’s intentions. I have asked Moore to let his clothes and the bonded store papers, keys etc lie at his house. I think I shall take very little furniture away from here when we settle for everyone says that so much gets broken and what with, rail & van expences and repairs afterwards it is almost better to buy new. What do you say? And had it not better be given to Graham to sell now, before the house is papered, to prevent defacing the walls afterwards, I hope I have not done wrong. I have sold all the wood iron etc etc for about £8. I could not get anyone to give more and I was two whole days sending about the town for buyers and could not get more Mr Cordy will receive any money offered him for me.”
