Letter from William Westmacott to Hooper & Raynes, regarding estate at Moreton in the Marsh.

“In reply to yours of the 16th I can send you one years rent on Tuesday next and on the 24th June can make you a further remittance of two years rent as I have on that day a quarter salary due from an official appointment of £150 per annum. By the terms of my appointment I may take my salary monthly but would rather not ask for it before the end of the quarter when a cheque is given as a matter of course. I have other sources of income but of uncertain payment. My tenancy of the house ends at Lady day. I took it of Mr R Allday with the consent of Mrs Matthews the then owner and I have Mr Allday’s agreement with a letter from Mrs Matthews stating the terms. Mr Allday wished to leave it without giving notice – I have some small bills for repairs which can be arrayed on the final settlement of the arrears of rent. Trusting the terms I have offered for payment may be satisfactory…Mr King Mr J Matthews brother called upon me some time ago respecting the rent and it is only very recently he informed me I might pay it to you.”
