Title
Examinations and depositions: Information of Wm. Brittain, Clophill, tailor and private in the Beds. Volunteer Cavalry. Went from his home 'fully accoutred with my pistol found by [the] Government in the Holster'. He joined the troop at Ampthill and they went to exercise in Houghton Meadow. After the exercise he, Wm. Hare of Gravenhurst, Thos. Hill of Lower Gravenhurst, Wm. Bottoms of Clophill and Fra. Read of Maulden went to the Royal Oak, Houghton Conquest 'to get refreshment'. While they were there the conversation turned to a prize pistol and sword which was to be given and a prize pistol which Hare had won ' the former year'. Hare went out to fetch his pistol but came back saying it was gone. They all went out and gained information as in QSR1825/311. Wm. Seabrook came out and said Grummit was in the house; they went back and Seabrook pointed him out to Brittain. Brittain asked Grummit for his pistol and when Grummit said he had not got it, drew his sword and held to him and said 'you Rascal you have it and if you do not give it to me I will run through directly for that is the King's property' Grummit rose up and said 'Stop sir, I will show you'. Grummit then went towards the front door and Jas. Redman who was also in the house went towards the back door. When Grummit got to the front door he denied all knowledge of the pistol but Brittain said he knew he had taken the pistol and would put him in the cage. Some of the others went out and returned with [Wm] George the constable. Batterson said Grummit should not go to the cage and 'throwed in my face a pipe he was smoking I pushed him away and Hare took him into custody and put him in the cage with Grummit'. Next morning Brittain, Hare and Read went to Houghton Conquest to take Grummit and Batterson before a magistrate and they learned at the Royal Oak that the pistols had been found.
