  • Scope and Content
W R Davidge is as asked for comments, he initially responds that he sees no grounds for the council to object provided the width of Silver Street has been considered. He mentions that no indication is given on the plan as to whether Old George Yard is private property but thinks it can be accepted as open space. The Borough Engineer points out that the plans include 'the Prioratus, which is an ancient and historic building...will be discussed at the next meeting of the Town Planning Committee, as to whether it will be scheduled under the Act as a historic building.'. The widening of Silver Street already agreed with Ministry of Transport and land sold on these conditions. W R Davidge responds 'I certainly think tht the Prioratus could be regarded as a building of both architectural and historic interest which would be desirable to preserve by means of an order under Section 17 of the Town and Country Planning Act. The alterations proposed by Messrs E P Rose and Son Ltd would virtually destroy its character as an ancient building. An extremely picturesque view of the building is obtained when seen through the archway from the High Street. The Council might like to consider taking over the building. It needs a certain amount of repair and restoration and an order for the preservation of the building will hardly be satisfactory if it is allowed to fall to pieces. In connection with this proposal consideration might be given to the clearing away of certain of the rather ramshackle buildings surrounding the Prioratus.'
