Admin/biog history
A few of the papers/records relate to, John Saville Brown (1850-1917), master butcher, farmer, landowner and also cattle breeder at Willoughby farm Gt Barford. J S Brown appears to have kept a butcher's shop from the 1870s and Willoughby Farm from the 1890s.
The papers relate mainly to J S Brown's son, John Harold Brown (1876-1970). J H Brown succeeded to his father's business in 1902 and shortly afterwards, on 27th April 1903, married Frances May Clarke at Great Barford. In 1917, he sold the butcher's shop to Sidney A Jeffs and began farming Willoughby and Birchfield Farms. He continued at the farms until his retirement in 1946. The farm was arable but also dairy and J H Brown bred dairy shorthorn cattle and was well known as a breeder.
J H Brown became a County Councillor in 1927 and an Alderman in 1940. He was also a JP, and churchwarden and, in 1950, published a short history of Gt Barford. For further notes on him see:
