John Harold Brown (father of J V Brown) was born in 1876 at Great Barford, son of John Saville Brown and his wife Emma. J S Brown appears to have kept the burcher's shop from the 1870s and Willoughby Farm from the 1890s. In 1902, J H Brown succeeded to his father's business and shortly afterwards, on 27th April 1903, married Frances May Clarke (who gifted this ledger) at Great Barford. In 1917, he sold the shop to Sidney A Jeffs and began farming Willoughby and Birchfield Farms. J H Brown became a County Councillor in 1927 and an Alderman in 1940. For further notes on him see:

Scope and Content
The indexed ledger holds accounts for mostly Great Barford and Roxton residents but also has a few from Wilden and Colmworth. It is formatted with: date, description of meat cut, price, date of settlement of account and amount, signed "J.H.B".
