  • Scope and Content
Dear Mama, I hope you received the photographs quite safely and were pleased with them. It was not from any pride in the uniform that I had them taken, but rather in response to promises extracted and perhaps with the same idea as Mr Veysey, one of our school teachers, who referred to his as a ‘freak’ photograph. It is the object of the training that s noxious to me, mama dear, not the actual training which doubtless if one can stand is beneficial. With the aid of two or three blankets and my heavy overcoat I am able to keep warm at night and the fellows in the hut go out ‘pilfering’ the coal trucks at night for fuel for the hut stove. I am going into the town tonight to get a bath and haircut and to purchase a loaf and as it is dark I shall risk wearing my civilian boots which seem like dancing pumps after the heavy army issue. Hoping to hear from you in the morning. I am Your’s lovingly Cyril
