    Charles Cyril Verdcourt (known as Cyril) was born in Clerkenwell on 20 August 1897 and moved to Luton at a young age. His father, Jean Joseph (known as Joseph), was a skilled hatter from near Liege, Belgium and attained British citizenship in 1910. He married Cyril’s mother, Helena Annie Sturman, from Leighton Buzzard in 1891. Their first son was Jean Edmund (known as Louis) was born in 1892. The family moved to Luton in 1905 and the 1911 census shows them at 26 William Street. Cyril was called up under the 1916 Military Service Act in autumn 1918 and after spending time in Suffolk and Staffordshire he served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 1919 to 1920. His letters home at this time can be found in Z549/17. In 1921 he joined the staff of Skefco Ball Bearing co. Ltd of Luton and became Planning Manager before his retirement in 1962.
