  • Scope and Content
“Dear Uncle, Your letter duly to hand, I could not ascertain the whereabouts of Down today but will try again tomorrow & write the owner of the ship he is in & then communicate with you. The stores supplied the “Wellington” Carr’s vessle, where necessities, or the greater amount of them, but I know very well that if the owner of a vessle resides in Great Brittain, you should always write him but it is very rarely done, I might say never, if the Capt gives you the order. I do not see that you have any chance of success in suing Carr, & should as you say compromise the affair with him on the best terms you can, then if the Capt viz Down, is worth powder & shot go into him which I believe you can, the only thing I see, is that Down has no money or next to none. Down’s evidence to the best of my memory was anything but satisfactory & if you had him now I doubt if he has any letters from Carr authorising him to buy stores. Down is a fool, Carr is a clever man. Hoping you are well….My mother is at Glan Ely when she returns I will see her. Will.”
