  • Scope and Content
"My dear Brother, I went up to Swell intending to balance all the accts_ and I have now been enabled to draw out a statement. The Swell rents are but few paid & those mother has recd but as she has also paid sundry small bills & kept no account I think one may be put against the other. The Beans Hay & Barley remain unsold – I get nothing from the cottages and am assessed at £30 pro tax for them so I think of letting Leque[?] offer them by auction & I should think the Barley & Hay should be sold same time – what say you – the Beans are being thrashed. I cannot make out Mrs Timbulls a/c – no doubt father did not reinvest the £200 recd from Phillips and that is due with about 8 years interest but there seems to be a balance of £60 or £70 due on the account. My bankers are trying to sift the £50 investment & ascertain when it was sold if at all – there is a sum of £50 – I placed to fathers credit the August after the last dividend is credited & I think that must have been recd & not reinvested. The money I recd from Savage was placed out a fortnight after it was paid off to a Mr Parker here he is a man of very considerable property and as I receive ground rents for him to the amount of £200 a year there is no fear of the interest being in arrear. A Merry Christmas to you all – We are well except colds. Miss Hooper returned with me. Very truly yours Bnjm Matthews. Cardiff. When I learn this my Bankers what was done with the £50 I will write you accd then square Turnbulls [?] a/c & the others."
