Also mentions a third phase is planned; 16 November 1962 Drawing showing potential layout of additional accommodation in relation to existing; scale 1/4" to 1'; undated; with build costs estimated at £4 per sq ft Letter from Director of Education to County Architect mentions that from information given by the College Principal 'the original request for six additional rooms for September 1963, has now, therefore, been reduced to four'; 1 March 1963 Detailed schedule of accommodation (20 pages) giving phase I, II, and III development with area in sq ft; last six pages gives courses provided along with figures for 'present enrolments 1962/3' and 'future enrolments estimated in 1969/70'; with letter dated 16 March 1963 Letter from Ministry of Education requesting the Authority to revise the schedule (as above), which the Ministry calculate at £203,380 total, to not exceed allocated sum of £170,000 to £180,000; 10 May 1963 Director of Education disagrees with calculation above and calculates figure at £179,624 total; mentions that Ministry costed works at 75/- and 95/- per sq ft but that a proportion of works would be at 85/- per sq ft; 15 May 1963 Letter from Director of Education includes a page of economies suggested by the Principal and states that by 'transferring the £8,000 for adaptations to a minor work, amending the provision for physical activity and omitting the Youth Employment Bureau (which the Ministry now agree should be provided from other monies)' the costing of the schedule would be: Engineering Workshop including circulation and ancillary 4,125 sq ft @ 75/- per sq ft £15,469 Printing Workshop " " " 2,575 sq ft @ 85/- per sq ft £10,944 Remainder " " " 30,000 sq ft @ 95/- per sq ft £142,500 ---------- £168,913 + 10% 16,891 £185,804 and mentions that if the accommodation for physical activities could be costed at a much lower figure than 95/- per sq ft, that could bring it within the agreed budget; 31 May 1963 Further Letter from Director of Education to Ministry of Education with revised schedule, with provision for Physical Education reduced by 900 sq ft and the Printing facility reduced by 230 sq ft: Engineering & Science workshops 4,375 sq ft @ 75/- £16,406 Printing & Arts workshops 2,575 sq ft @ 85/- £10,944 Physical Education 3,867 sq ft @ 85/- £16,435 Remainder 25,147 sq ft @ 95/- £119,448 ----------- £163,233 + 10% 16,323 £179,556 1 July 1963 41 page booklet 'Brief to the Architect'; July 1963 Letter from Ministry of Education states that the Minister approves the schedule and includes some amendments giving a revised total of £189,316, with comment 'it is considered doubtful whether a satisfactory Sports Hall can be provided within a limit of 1,800 sq ft' and 'it is important that the plans should be flexible so as to permit at a later date the reallocation of rooms and additions to the whole college as now contemplated'; 14 October 1963 Letter from Miss M M Neal, Leader, Homecrafts Section, with drawing of 'suggested plan for Home Management room - phase II'; scale 1" to 4'; 13 November 1963 Letter from R F Carrington, Borough Engineer and Surveyor, Dunstable, that he proposes accepting the tender of Messrs Jepps and Horsted Limited, Hemel Hempstead, of £683..2s for the erection of boundary fencing (being the lowest of three amounts tendered); 27 April 1964 Memo from Director of Education states that facilities for Linotype mechanical composition should be included in phase II and one classroom will have to be sacrificed at 400 sq ft @ 95/- to accommodate an area of 500 sq ft @ 75/- for this purpose; 28 July 1964 Letter (6 pages) from Director of Education with comments on line sketch plan after consultation with the College; mentions concern that a proposed road could impact on future expansion; 13 October 1964 One memo mentions that 'drawings of two plans for laboratory layouts ...were prepared by Mr J V Crome, a member of the teaching staff at the college, in connection with his entry for "The Guinness Award for Science Teachers 1964"'; 18 January 1965 Bound copy of 'Schedule of Accommodation' (15 pages) with note 'as agreed by the Department of Education and Science'; with revised costings: Workshops 7,575 sq ft @ 80/- £30,300 "Other" 30,213 sq ft @ !00/- £151,065 ----------- £181,365 Additional (10 %) 18,136 £199,501 February 1965 Copy of planning application by Vauxhall Motors for 'proposed new service training centre' on the Park Estate, with location map.
