- Scope and ContentHad been waiting anxiously to hear of General Lake's return to Dublin. The bandits still commit many outrages. However, they do not regret their situation, and tell the writer of the many agreeable acquaintances they have made. Some families are in a hurry to leave Ireland while others were coming to cheer husbands who were stationed there. [Presumed reference t Irish rebellion of 1798] Son Edward and his wife are paying a visit to Northchurch to see Francis [Barker] on their way to London. 'The accident which deprived Lady Elgin of her second son has a consolation attending it, if what I am told is true - that he was suffering from temporary derangements - and believe my authority was good. [Possibly refers to James Bruce, who died 10 July 1798]
