- Scope and ContentHas already been a fortnight at Aston Clinton; the children provide infinite amusement. Their Mother is as composed as can be expected [her husband Gerard Lake is serving in the army in the American Revolutionary War]. Mrs Lake has cleaned and new painted the house at Aston Clinton, and for a summer house it really is cheery enough. She is now going on with a plantation and long gravel walk. There are no near neighbours, so sorry that the Gore family have left Tring Park; the master of it has gone to Brussells while his affairs are settling. Old Monsieur Graventop has come down to end his days at [Hemel] Hempstead - a late stroke of the palsey has made his speech almost unintelligible. Heard son Francis preach today for the second time. - he performs much to the writer's satisfaction.
