Letter to S. R. Wells Esq from E. G. Vecqueray, Secretary of The Bedford Guild of Help, giving details of two cases for consideration by the trustees of the Hawes Charity.

1) Miss Sarah Harvey, 21 Costin Street, Bedford, age 61. Miss Harvey looks after her father aged 81 who had a Stroke 16 years ago For some time now she has been in a very weak state of health, quite unable to look after her Father nor do any work. The committee at once granted 10/- per week for 13 weeks. Reference can be made to Dr. Perram, Rev. L. Brooks, and Mrs Roe. 2: Mr. Harry Parkes, 159 Castle Road, age 69. Mr Parkes was a watchmaker on his own account until about Christmas last when he had a kidney attack. This was followed last September by a paralytic stroke and he has been in bed ever since. His wife age 62 looks after him and the house. They have one Daughter who is a music teacher and brings in £12.00 per quarter. The family savings are now all exhausted and a neighbour, Mr. J. D. Thomas brought the case to us. Our committee granted 10/- a week for 13 weeks and also 1 CWT. Coal per week for the same period. The case is known to Mr. Birch, head clerk at Messrs. Halliley & Morrison, and also Dr. Roberts. 'Since this Society was formed we have dealt with nearly 5,000 cases and have no hesitation in saying that the above represent two of the most deserving we have come across.'
