- Title2 pictures of Brian Edward Howard 1935-2010. Mr Howard joined the family company Howards of Bedford in 1960, a business which specialised in the manufacturing of Hemelite building blocks. Soon afterwards, the block works division was expanded to cover the country. Brian became Chairman when his Father died in 1979, and in 1983 Hemelite Blocks was sold to Tarmac. Under his leadership, the Company then built the St John's Retail Park and Howard House in the centre of Bedford. He was a member of Bedford Rotary Club since 1969 and he served as President in 1985; he was High Sheriff of Bedfordshire 1994-95; President of the Old Bedfordians Club; Governor of Bedford School and Swanbourne House School; Vice President of St John Ambulance (Bedford); and President of YMCA (Bedford).
