- Admin/biog historyDean was the estate of Richard Verity 1788-1857 and on his death it passed to his only child Charlotte Verity who married Henry Dalton. Their decedents continued to live at Dean House until about 1950. Charlotte and Henry's son, Fitzgerald Verity Dalton (1862-1930) married Ellen Louise Nelson of Rousham, Oxon (1863-1946) in 1889 and they had children: Charlotte Louise Fitzgerald Dalton, son Louis Fitzgerald Verity Dalton (1892-c1950) and Ellen Margaret Fitzgerald Dalton (1893-1980). Charlotte (also known as Ba or Barbara) (1890-1979) served: as a nurse in France during the First World War, as a member of the Women’s Voluntary Service during the Second World War, as County Commissioner for the Girl Guides, in the local Women’s Institute, as a Justice of the Peace, and in other community roles. In 1945, after a lengthy, long-distance courtship, she married George Mackay Brown. Charlotte Mackay Brown spent her last years at Dean. The collection mainly represents the life and interests of Charlotte Mackay Brown. Louis F V Dalton married Saidee Smith and they had one daughter, Alison. Ellen M F Dalton never married.
- Archival historyThe last member of the Dalton family was very interested in local history and held many roles within the community. On her death many of her papers passed to the Wade family who also had an interest in local history and affairs. The collection of papers from both families was then gifted to the archive service in 2017 by Mr Wade. An addition gift was made in 2018 by Mr Verity, who had been lent certain photographs and papers by Mr Wade.
