Admin/biog history
Born in Algiers Henry William Bayntun (1766-1840) began his naval career in 1777. He received his lieutenancy in 1783 when aged 17. He was sent to the West Indies in 1793 and did not return to England until 1804. He was given command of the fast third rate HMS Leviathan and she joined Nelson's fleet off Brest and then pursued the French fleet towards the West Indies. Leviathan returned to European waters and sailed to Gibraltar arriving off Cadiz on 8 October 1805. She was engaged in the battle of Trafalgar on the 21st October. Bayntun continued in the navy being promoted to rear-admiral of the blue on 12 Aug 1812 and was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in January 1815. He was advance to rear-admiral of the white on 4 June 1814 and rear admiral of the red on 12 Aug 1819, then vice admiral of the blue in July 1819, vice admiral of the white 1825 and vice admiral of the red 1830. On 10 January 1837 he was made an admiral of the blue and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in 25 October 1839.
Bayntun seems to have had a son and daughter, Susan Werden Bayntun, by a first marriage to Sophia Dyer. In August 1809 he married Sophia Mayhew and had two children Werden William Thomas (21/2/1813 - 1842) and Clementina Elizabeth Mary (7 Aug 1815, married John Boode 1834, and Jules Charles de Genton Baron de Villefranche in 1875, d. 1888)
Susan Werden Bayntun (thought to be Bayntun's daughter by his first marriage) was baptised in May 1809. She married on the 31 May 1839 Richard Verity of Dean House, Bedfordshire.
Susan Werden Bayntun was Richard Verity's second wife. Richard Verity had a daughter, Charlotte, by his first wife and the Bayntun material belonging to Richard and Susan Verity descended through Richard's daughter Charlotte who married Henry Dalton.
