  • Scope and Content
My dear Bessy, We quit this place in two hours; I should carry a much lighter heart into the Post Chaise were I happy eno' to add that I had received a letter from You; but the Post is arrived & not a syllable from Fallodon. To what can I attribute this? If my letters had miscarried She surely would have written, without waiting ceremoniously for my letters? She cannot have forgotten me; She cannot be offended; if she were not well Charles might have written or anyone. All these reasons present themselves to me as the cause of this disappointment, & are all rejected; & I am left in the uncertainty & distress which you can concieve arising from this circumstance. You will be surprized to hear that we take the route of Toulouse, & propose going from thence by Narbonne, Montpellier, Nymes, & Avignon to Geneva. A letter that I received this morning from my Father expresses so great a desire that we should see this part of France, that we have determined to brave the heat. in eight days we hope to be at Geneva. You shall hear from me on the road. I cannot reconcile myself to the Idea of not hearing from you for so long, & have therefore given Orders to my Valet de Chambre to await the arrival of the next Courier, & to cross immediately from hence & meet us at Geneva; should he not bear with him a letter I shall be very very much mortified indeed. but I hope he will. As soon as you receive this, if you wish to think that my mind is at all at ease, you will write to me & direct it to the Bankers at Zurich en Suisse. I will continue to get it. after that continue to direct to Strasbourg. Everything goes on well at Bedwell. I hope all is well at Fallodon. but I am an overanxious fool, & shall receive your letter at Geneva. if You are conscious of having written, suppose this letter annihilated, recollect that the Joy I shall have in receiving the packet will be equal to the sorrow I now feel at the disappointment. Remember me to all about you. Remember me Yourself; if You do not, you ill requite one who bears you most constant in his mind & Heart. & who is my dearest Bessy, & will ever remain with all sincerity & affection Your's & Your's only S. Whitbread. Adieu. Adieu.
