    Whitbread Correspondence
  • Scope and Content
The content of the family papers: the collection consists mainly of letters received by Samuel Whitbread Esq., M.P., who was born in 1758 and died in 1815. Printed papers which are germane to the subject are often included in the files, and a large number of these deal with the political and social questions in which he took an energetic interest. These interests are detailed under his name in the Dictionary of National Biography volume LXI, 24-28.
  • System of arrangement
A few items that were listed in the catalogue but never received by the Record Office, or which have since been borrowed or withdrawn and not returned, are noted as “missing” against the relevant catalogue entry. Where a letter touches on more than one subject, very often duplicate letters exist in the relevant sections so that continuity of subject is retained.
