Her husband Thomas Smith, who is adjutant to Durham militia, has so much to do that he cannot take other employment, but his pay hardly covers expenses; seeks appointment as barrack-master in Durham district. Asks for uncle's "support and interest, through Mr Whitbread, who has now the sole power of bestowing appointments in the Barrack Department".
