  • Production date
    From: 1800 To: 1800
  • Scope and Content
    (1) Will write to Lord Ilchester & apply through some channel to the persons mentioned, but does not feel inclined to go far. A man in SW's position is not called on for voluntary sacrifices to public considerations, for which he already suffers sufficiently. 14 March 1800. (2) Nephew is to see Pitt, who has more influence as regards the prison than any other magistrate. Considers SW's situation dispenses with such sacrifice (as above). Mentions his reading. Whatever writer & Lord Holland can do will be done, (application for situation in prison?) 19 March 1800. (3) Has written to Lord Ilchester & will to Lord Dorchester. Has no way of applying to Browne. More remarks about his reading. 13 April 1800. (4) Lord Ilchester will speak to Frampton. Nephew has spoken to Pitt, who will speak about the business. A room in the goaler's house seems most eligible. More about reading. 20 April 1800. (5) About his reading. Glad the business is settled. His maxim is to suffer extortion rather than personal exertion. 20 June 1800 (Note by M.D.: This refers to Gilbert Wakefield imprisoned for sedition.)
