  • Scope and Content
"A short break in between visitors has enabled me to get out my typewriter and answer some letters, including yours of June 22nd. Yes, I think the enclosed square of knitting should be fine enough, and I suggest the 40 inch size. It is very kind of you to do it, and it will be a most useful thing in the winter, as I have nothing like it in my present "collection". Thank you for the enclosures. When I go to Hoscote, I will see what Adam's tape-recorder is. The point is that my tapes (when and if I get a recorder) must be able to go on Adam's recorder. I don't know if they are standard, or vary from make to make. But that we can discover. I was also interested to see Romola's new hat! I must say I think it suits her. I am glad she has abandoned those inverted soup dishes at last. I have just had time to glance through the Beds. Mag. I notice the photograph of the lych-gate, under which I have stood so many times waiting for funerals to arrive! My arrangements are now as follows: I have guests this weekend, and next weekend. The following weekend I am going to Oxford for a garden party at New College, followed by a dinner in Hall for old members of the College. The Warden, appointed last year, is Sir William Hayter, who was our Ambassador to Russia for some years, so I shall be able to talk Russia with him! I do hope it is a fine weekend, as Oxford is heavenly in fine weather, and I shall hope to do a bit of punting on the river. I also hope to call on my old friend Ida Huckings, about whom I told you I think when you were here. She came to Ampthill once or twice when I was living at S.Joseph's. Miss Di was greatly attracted to her, and left her amethysts (I daresay you remember how she always wore them!) I leave here on July 21st. for Yorkshire, en route for Hoscote. I am staying a week with the Waddingtons, Christine (the younger second cousin once removed) has her 21st. birthday that week, and they are having a party for her. I believe she is going to announce her engagement to a young doctor on the occasion. Her grandmother (my mother's cousin) celebrates her 89th. birthday on the 24th., so there will be a party then too. I go on to Hoscote on July 28th., and I shall be there until the end of August, or beginning of September, when I return here for a few days to re-pack, and then I fly out to Venice on September 11th. to join the yacht. I expect to be back at the beginning of October, and my next departure abroad will not be until December 20th. when I depart for Tangier, and on to Tenerife in the Canary Islands: and there I expect to remain for some weeks. I shall look forward to seeing you in October when you come to Deal. Let us hope you have better weather than on your late visit. We are certainly not having a repetition of last year's summer yet! It is fine here, but we have had a lot of wind, and it is still very cool: much too cool to indulge in bathing! Yours sincerely,"
