  • Scope and Content
    Set of 210 letters. Except where indicated otherwise, they begin "Dear Nora" and are signed "John Hillam". From 19 July 1938, the letters have embossed letterheads with "The Rectory, Ampthill, Beds." From 16 April 1943, they have printed letterheads with "The Rectory, Ampthill, Bedford. Tel. Ampthill 20." From 3 October 1944, they have printed letterheads with "St Joseph's, Ampthill, Bedford. Telephone Ampthill 111." This was the name given to the house belonging to Diana and Florence Eagles for the period of their ownership. It is otherwise known as "The Red House" in Ampthill. From 9 October 1947, they have variously handwritten, printed or typed letterheads with "113 Queens Road, Richmond, Surrey." with "Richmond 3945" being added to the printed ones. From 14 December 1954, they have mostly printed letterheads with "Kingsgate Castle, Broadstairs, Kent." with the first one having this address handwritten with the printed Richmond address crossed out. From 13 October 1959, they have the telephone number "Thanet 63256." printed in the top left-hand corner.
