"A Happy New Year to you! This will only be a short letter - to thank you for your Christmas card and the Beds. magazine, and your letter of Dec. 27th - as I am clearing up, packing up, and settling up ready to move off with my friend Petrie to Cortina on Wednesday. We go by train from Broadstairs direct to Dover harbour, which is very convenient. We expect to be away about a month - possibly longer - it all depends on the conditions out there. This will be the first time I have been to Italy for winter sports. I am looking forward to seeing the skating rink at Cortina - you may remember the Olympic skating championships were held there last year. I am sorry to miss the TV visit to the Professor. Yes, I heard the talk with John Betjeman. The Professor has certainly made a great name for himself in the past 20 years. But I found him disappointing as a parishioner, I'm afraid! How splendid it would have been if all that family (including Houfe) had been 100% in the church! I am sorry to hear about poor old Cunliffe. It seems you are doomed to be the female pen friend of the Nigerian prince! Anyway, he is gallant enough to say your age is no matter. The situation has all the elements of another "Anna and the King of Siam"! Don't miss the film, by the way: "The King and I": quite charming. Yours sincerely"
