  • Scope and Content
"I am writing as there does not seem to be a chance of my getting into School today at any rate! I am glad Joyce Maycock is coming in. She seemed quite ready to do it. I went on to see if I could get Winnie Gamble, but no reply to my knock! I met her brother, and he told me she has a job in Bedford now: so I think she will have to be ruled out. I don't think Robert Alderton and Roy Smith (the two boys I am taking in hand for the boys' room) are ready to teach: but I think it would be better to let Joan Henson come to you on Advent Sunday so that you can get your department settled: and I will try and sort out the boys' room with the help of the Captain. Will you ask Joan Henson, and say that she will be able to start with you on Advent Sunday? My situation is complicated by the fact that Captain Thompson is expecting to go at any moment, and he may not be here even next Sunday. However, another young Captain is taking his place, so he will probably take over. On Sunday the aforesaid Captain Thompson told me he had talked to you about the removing of the children's service to the Church Hall, and you had pointed out the difficulty about seating and hymn books. Also a suggestion about having it in the Church Day Schools. I think the latter is better. Shall I give it out that they are to go to the Day Schools, as in the morning? I am going to talk to the Captain about rigging up an altar of some kind. I will acquire a crucifix and some candlesticks and a velvet cover of some kind, and this ought to help in creating the atmosphere. If it were held in the room where Miss Geeves' class meets, it ought to be quite good. The next point is: how are we to have a Children's Festival on the Patronal Festival Sunday, when I give out things? Evensong will be at 3, and the only suggestion I can make is that we have the children at 2.15 sharp, and that I end it sharp at 2.45. What do you think of this? We ought to have it in the Church. The choirboys are another problem, but I shall have to solve it somehow. If they have been to Sunday School and Sung Eucharist, the poor dears ought to have their picture. But I must try and find out from the other department how their attendances have gone ... (if they have kept any record!). My letter has turned out to be longer than yours! However, I shall have settled one or two of the questions when I come into school on Friday. Yours sincerely, P.S. Don't call me "Dear Mr Hallam". I prefer "Dear Rector" ... it's more friendly!"
