Translation: “Louis by the grace of God King of France and of Navarre to all men present and future: Greetings.” [There follows a copy of the patent or treaty granting land in the island of St Vincent to Martha Swinburne, wife of Henry Swinburne. It states that upon representation from the Lady Swinburne of Hamsterly in the County of Durham that there is much uncultivated unassigned land on St Vincent, and that it be granted to her, her heirs and assigns, “a perpetuite at en toute proprete”, that no “finance”[sum payable to the King of France] or indemnity will be required and that the land is granted “don et demise” according to the ordinance and regulations concerning concessions of land in French colonies. There follow details of what should happen in the case of tenancies granted by Martha Swinburne and the document closes by stating that the above, being the pleasure of the King and so that it should be a fixed and stable thing, his seal is affixed to the patent.] “Given at Versailles 9th November in the year of grace 1782 and the 9th of our reign: Louis.
