  • Scope and Content
INTRODUCTION In Autumn 1994, two large boxes of photographs were received from Fire Service Headquarters, Kempston. The contents of these boxes were appraised and about half the contents returned to FSHQ. The photographs included in this catalogue were chosen bearing a number of criteria in mind, as follows: FSD/PH1 PERSONNEL: only photographs showing named personnel were retained unless they were over fifty years old, in which case the comparative rarity led to their retention. FSD/PH2 TRAINING: wherever possible, photographs showing named personnel were selected, though the primary consideration was to choose the best photographs showing training methods, equipment etc. of the Brigade at the time the photograph was taken. FSD/PH3 PROPERTY: a small series purely showing fire stations, firemen's houses etc. NOTE: fire stations are also shown in other series, notably FSD/PH1 (e.g. FSD/PH1/9, 1/14, 1/22 and 1/35 showing the opening ceremonies at Sandy, Biggleswade, Dunstable and Stopsley fire stations respectively). FSD/PH4 EQUIPMENT: photographs selected are those with clear views of equipment, notably fire engines, though some may also contain named personnel. FSD/PH5 INCIDENTS: this series has been selected largley on informational rather than evidential grounds, i.e. for the topographical features, buildings etc. shown in them rather than the fire-fighting techniques applied. Wherever possible, only those photographs with a clear location address have been chosen, though some older examples have been retained because they were more than fifty years old and hence of comparitive rarity. Where a photograph is known to have been taken by an named individual/organisation, other than a member of Bedfordshire County Council Photographic Department, this is noted in square brackets at the end of the entry.
