- TitleBedfordshire County Council Fire Service
- Admin/biog historyFire fighting became a County responsibility in about 1947. In 1941 the independent fire authorities were replaced by the National Fire Service (NFS) to cope with the emergency situation. This service which incorporated the Auxiliary Fire Service formed in 1937, remained until 1947/8 when the brigades were restored to their local authorities. The NFS was organised into numbered Fire Forces which, in turn, were sub-divded into 5 Divisions (and, from June 1945, 3 sub-areas) Bedfordshire being a Division (and later Sub-Area B) of No 12 Fire-Force Area (whose Headquarters were at Stevenage, Herts.) under a Divisional Officer (and later Sub-Area) Commander based at Luton Fire Station. At first the County Control was at Luton but it later passed to Bedford. From 1964-1974 the County Borough of Luton had its own independent brigade.
