  • Scope and Content
"Not being timely apprised... charge me with want of humanity to Lady Marchmont towards whom I shall ever feel a tenderness and respect. There was [never?] any part of Lord Polwarth's situation concealed from her, though perhaps both she and I might too long flatter ourselves as to the event. Her letters last winter... fears... long before I had given up all hopes. When Dr Fordyce began explicitly to warn me of a near approaching danger, I first proposed his waiting on your lordship in order to break it to her. When sad event happened, more suddenly than I expected, I could not bring myself to write letters and was obliged to employ the only person in the house with me not a servant., My weak endeavours shall never be wanting to do justice to all.
